About us

JOHN ADAMS & ASSOCIATES is no ordinary law firm.

John returned to the North Coast in 2014 after a decade as a solicitor in Sydney, the Riverina and New England. A year later he was joined by two solicitors with local roots and John Adams, sole practitioner, became John Adams & Associates.

We are Australian Legal Practitioners, admitted in the Supreme Court of NSW and the High Court, and share a fascination with the constantly evolving and intricate system of laws governing all of us. Our skills lie in using this system to assist in cost-effectively resolving legal problems. We speak and write Plain English and appear in all courts in the North East of NSW and sometimes beyond.

We like to save clients unnecessary stress and expense by helping to resolve issues before filing in the courts. That said, if we do need to go to court, we see ourselves as having three distinct roles; to assist the court in justly applying the law, to put your case as powerfully as permitted by the rules, and - relying on our own life experience and empathy - as friend and advisor to guide you through what can be a long and confronting journey.

Our people

John Adams – Principal Solicitor

BA(Hons1) (UWA), LLB (SCU), LLM (College of Law), Dip. Teach. (Secondary Teachers College WA)

Born in Perth, John arrived on the North Coast from Lismore (Victoria) in the early eighties.

On leaving school he completed first year law then, half-way through second year, dropped out to investigate other possibilities. A few decades later he rediscovered his fascination with Criminal Law.

Recently he gained a Master of Laws (Applied Law) majoring in Family Law. After over a decade helping family law clients through divorce, parenting, and property division matters, he prides himself on refining and sorting their legal issues quickly, ethically and cheaply.

John also holds a First in English from UWA and a Bachelor of Laws from SCU. He has worked in a wide range of occupations including theatre, the public service, labouring, teaching, forestry, hospitality, museum cataloguing, farming and academia. A Young Writer’s Fellowship from the Literature Board of the Australia Council was followed by half a lifetime producing prose and poetry. He writes a stylish affidavit.

In his late thirties, divorced and widowed, after many adventures in Australia and elsewhere, he found himself the single father of a 9-year-old girl. He ran a therapeutic massage business in Lismore for 15 years before returning to the law, when he worked in many areas of law and many courts in Sydney, the Riverina, and New England before returning to the North Coast to set up his own firm.

His wide experience of dealing with people means he is comfortable talking with almost anyone, from little kids and angry or sad mums and dads, to career criminals, judges and police.
